Reduce the risk this festive season

With the festive season upon us, many workplaces are preparing to wind down and celebrate the year that was. An office Christmas party can be a great way to reward staff and celebrate the year’s achievements, however, employers should be mindful that they are still responsible, and in some cases liable, for health and safety issues that might occur.

Below are some tips for consideration:

  • Communicate standards of behaviour
Remind staff of your company's policies in relation to conduct and behaviour, prior to the event. This should include OHS, Bullying, Harassment and Sexual Harassment. Managers should brief their staff and lead by example.
  • Ensure responsible service of alcohol
Provide plenty of food, water and non-alcoholic alternatives. Be aware of staff that may be drinking too much and intervene where necessary.
  • Set clear parameters
Communicate the start and cease time of the party and stick to those times. Clearly announce when the function has concluded and advise staff that the remainder of the night is their own personal time. If possible, provide transport to and from the event.

Gallagher Bassett would like to wish you all a safe and happy festive season and a prosperous 2016.
